New Yorker WordPress Theme
New Yorker is a fluid four column theme for WordPress. Yea, you read it right - it is indeed four column. Inspired by the New Yorker online magazine, this theme has many unique features to boast about, starting right from it’s four column layout.
The header image captures your attention immediately. You may not understand what it is but it surely looks incredible for a blog header.
On the right part of the header we have a multi time zone display featuring four analog clocks. This is a flash component that comes with the theme. So no extra installation required.
The page navigation bar and it’s accompanying graphics underneath looks excellent. Try hovering your mouse over the nav bar buttons and you will see a nice tool tip coming up in the form of a layer.
Now how did the four column layout fit to your normal screen? Well, the third column is very thin and has only flickr photo feeds and vertical sky scraper banners. Left sidebar consists of the typical navigation components. Only extra is the first block which shows some statistic data like post count and comment count. On the right sidebar we have the calendar, categories, archives and the links.
In the second column we have the content items. Now this theme follows a 1 / 2,3 pattern i.e. latest post occupying the entire column in the first row, under which older posts divide the second row into two equal columns. This post layout is commonly associated with CMS packages like Joomla and is hardly used in blogs.
On the footer there is some graphics display but I believe it will mostly go unnoticed if your blog is fairly big.
My conclusion - a very unique design. The developer says this theme comes with lots of WordPress php scripts built in. Even if it doesn’t have all those stuff, the design itself is worth a free download.
